An investigation of Fe XVI emission lines in solar and stellar EUV and soft X-ray spectra

چکیده
New fully relativistic calculations of radiative rates and electron impact excitation cross sections for Fexvi are used to determine theoretical emission-line ratios applicable to the 251–361 Å and 32–77 Å portions of the extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray spectral regions, respectively. A comparison of the EUV results with observations from the Solar Extreme-Ultraviolet Research Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS) reveals excellent agreement between theory and experiment. However, for emission lines in the 32–49 Å portion of the soft X-ray spectral region, there are large discrepancies between theory and measurement for both a solar flare spectrum obtained with the X-Ray Spectrometer/Spectrograph Telescope (XSST) and observations of Capella from the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. These are probably due to blending in the solar flare and Capella data from both first order lines and from shorter wavelength transitions detected in second and third order. By contrast, there is very good agreement between our theoretical results and the XSST and LETGS observations in the 50–77 Å wavelength range, contrary to previous results. In particular, there is no evidence that the Fexvi emission from the XSST flare arises from plasma at a much higher temperature than that expected for Fexvi in ionization equilibrium, as suggested by earlier work.

UV and soft X-ray lines from Fe XVI observed in solar and stellar spectra
The ion Fe XVI is abundant in solar active regions and flares. Strong spectral lines from this ion have been observed over a wide wavelength range. The transitions 3s 3p and 3p 3d fall between 250 and 365Å and lines from transitions between n=3 to n=4, n=3 to n=5 fall between 30 and 80 Å. In this paper, we present distorted wave results for the electron scattering collision strengths from the g...
متن کاملFirst evidence of non-Gaussian solar flare EUV spectral line profiles and accelerated non-thermal ion motion
Context. The properties of solar flare plasma can be determined from the observation of optically thin lines. The emitting ion distribution determines the shape of the spectral line profile, with an isothermal Maxwellian ion distribution producing a Gaussian profile. Non-Gaussian line profiles may indicate more complex ion distributions. Aims. We investigate the possibility of determining flare...

Aims. We study the EUV/soft X-ray emission generated by charge transfer between solar wind heavy ions and interstellar neutral atoms and variations of the X-ray intensities and spectra with the line of sight direction, the observer location, the solar cycle phase and the solar wind anisotropies, and a temporary enhancement of the solar wind similar to the event observed by Snowden et al. (2004)...
